Success begets further success and the Mid-Prairie girls golf team, who have placed first or won every golf meet and dual they have played in the month of May, have been rolling as of late.

Traveling to the Stone Creek Golf Club to compete in the 2A Regional Final, the Golden Hawks claimed first place on May 17 with a new school record, 367, and earned a bid to the 2A State Golf meet for the second year in a row.

“Today was a culmination of a season of hard work and practice. The girls team score of 367 is a new school record and quite an accomplishment,” Mid-Prairie golf coach Tracy McArtor said. “They went up against a solid field and proved how good they really are. I’m so proud of how they handled themselves today from start to finish. They were solid with the swings as well as course management.”

With this being the second straight year Mid-Prairie will be competing in state it makes it the first time this has happened for its golf program since 2009-2010. Also, with this first place finish at regionals Mid-Prairie’s overall record improves to 38-6.

The Regional Champion Golden Hawks finished ten strokes better than the runner-up school, West Marshall who shot 377 as a team. Earning medalist honors with the lowest score among 37 golfers was Mediapolis junior Olivia Hines who shot an 84.

The leading scorer for the Golden Hawks was junior Gabi Robertson, who placed second overall to earn runner-up medalist honors. Robertson shot 40 in the front nine and a 47 in the back nine to reach a final score of 87.

Just two swings of the club behind her fellow Mid-Prairie teammate was senior Kylie Reinier. Reinier would finish in third place with a score of 89. Then rounding out the top ten finishes for the Golden Hawks would be junior Madi Davidson, who tied for seventh with a score of 93.

“Gabi’s two PR’s she set today were great and she along with Kylie and Madi finishing in the top 7 for the medal race against this competition was awesome,” McArtor said.

The final contributor to the new Mid-Prairie school record and first place team score was junior Elliot Debler. Debler finished the day with a score of 99 to enter a three-way tie for 17th place.

“Elliott Debler came back strong on the back nine with a nice round of 48 to round out the team scoring for us and has been putting up some really good numbers over the past couple weeks,” McArtor said.

Having officially punched their ticket to state Mid-Prairie (38-6) will travel to the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown to compete in the Class 2A State Tournament on May 25-26. Last year the Golden Hawks placeßd 10th at state, but this time around there are loftier goals in mind.

“We’re looking forward to getting ready for the State Meet next week and improving on our finish from last year,” McArtor said.
