Grapples, take downs, and plenty of falls were in no short order this past Friday as Highland girls wrestling welcomed 20 teams for their annual home tournament.
Claiming the team title by securing first place with a score of 180 was Iowa City Liberty and scoring 142 to place third in the team standings was Fort Madison.
Mid-Prairie Results
Powered by five Golden Hawks placing second in their respective brackets, it was a solid night of wrestling for Mid-Prairie as they finished with 160.5 points to earn the runner-up spot.
Continuing to excel in her senior year, Ashlee Farrier (15-0) won both of her matches (18-1 tech fall and fall in 43 seconds) at 130 lbs to place 2nd. Due to the tournament ending early meant not all matches were completed, leaving Farrier earning second place alongside Fort Madison’s Mara Smith.
Also going undefeated on the night to place 2nd was Ellie Callahan (11-3). The junior at 170 lbs earned two wins (both by fall, in 46 seconds and 1:22) to wind up in second place along with Denver’s McKenna Broadhead.
Mardie Berry (11-5) was another Golden Hawk to claim a runner-up position. The junior won her quarterfinal match (by fall in 14 seconds) and her semifinal match (by 16-11 decision) in the 145 lbs bracket to capture 2nd place. IC West’s Callum Wu also ended up with a second-place finish in this bracket.
The 135 lbs bracket also produced a runner-up finish for Mid-Prairie with Emmerson Moore (9-4) going 3-0 at Highland. Moore, a sophomore, won all three of her matches by fall (in 18 seconds, 52 seconds, and 1:30). Second place in this bracket was also awarded to Wilton’s Kaydence Boorn.
Austyn Sexton (16-4) was the final Golden Hawk to place second. The sophomore at 110 lbs won in the quarterfinals, (medical forfeit), and in the semifinals (fall in 33 seconds), but was defeated by fall in 4:06 in the first-place match against Denver’s Violet Diaz.
Other strong finishes for Mid-Prairie came from senior Gabby Gingerich (14-6) at 115 lbs and junior Cassie Trimpe (14-5at 155 lbs. Both Gingerich and Trimpe placed third in their respective brackets with the senior going 3-1 and the junior going 2-1.
Lone Tree Results
A total of four Lady Lions showcased their skills at Highland, and they collected 23.5 points to place 15th in the final team standings.
Lone Tree’s top finisher was Kayleigh Rundlett (16-15) wrestling at 145 lbs. The senior in her second year of wrestling went 2-1 on the night to place 5th. Her first win was by fall in 47 seconds and her second win also came by fall in 1:59.
The next top placement for the Lady Lions came from Ashlynn Sojka (9-14). The junior wrestling at 235 lbs placed sixth after being defeated by Columbus’ Brynn Pogmore in the fifth-place match by 5-3 decision.
Despite not earning placements, senior (21-15) Alex Dautremont and sophomore (16-17) Olivia Magruder both earned victories to contribute to the team score.
Dautremont wrestling at 140 lbs went 1-2 with her lone win coming by fall in 49 seconds. Magruder went 2-2 at 130 lbs with her first win coming by fall in 1:01 and her next win being earned by tech fall, 17-1.
Highland Results
In their annual home tournament, the Huskies were represented by Maiya Singbeil, a freshman wrestling at 135 and it was quite the busy night for the first-year wrestler.
After falling in her first match of the night, Singbeil regrouped and rattled off three straight victories to earn a 5th place finish, earning 13.5 team points to place Highland 20th in the final team standings.
Singbeil’s first win came by way of a medical forfeit over Josie Nelson of Columbus. Then in the consolation semifinals she won by fall in 1:43 over Christy Knapp of English Valleys.
Taking on Acasia Lukalaba Ndomba of IC Liberty in the fifth-place match, Singbeil found herself tied 3-3 once the first period ended. The second period was dominated by Singbeil, scoring nine points via takedowns and eight more points via near-falls. Her barrage of points led to the match being ended in her favor, winning by tech fall, 20-5.
