Mid-Prairie’s girls distance medley team charged to another victory Friday.

Even faster than the Golden Hawks did last year.

Madeline Schrader, Amara Jones, Mitzi Evans and Danielle Hostetler combined to win the event in 4 minutes, 7.96 seconds, at the Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium.

The win was the fourth consecutive state title in the distance medley and it came nearly three seconds faster than their winning finish in 2021.

“It feels awesome because I feel like the distance medley has been  there for a long time,” Evans said. “It means a lot to me … to carry on the tradition of our school.”

“Being able to watch those distance medleys before, actually being a part of one, it’s just so exciting,” Jones said.

Mid-Prairie, which is seeking its fourth consecutive state team girls title, sits atop the leaderboard with 35 points entering Saturday’s final day of competition.

By the time Evans, a senior, handed the baton to Hostetler, a sophomore, for the anchor leg of the distance medley, the Golden Hawks were in front by a considerable distance. Hostetler, a two-time state cross country individual and team champion, bolted around Drake’s blue oval for her second first-place medal of the meet. She won the 3,000-meter run Thursday.

Evans, who is also a multiple state champion with the cross country squad, won the 400 in a personal-record time of 56.36 seconds and finished first in the 200-meter prelims with a personal-best time of 25.55 seconds.

Madeline Nonnenmann and Ella Groenewold added to Mid-Prairie’s points total with 10th-place finishes in the discus and high jump, respectively.

Cain Brown, a junior, led the Mid-Prairie boys with a fourth-place finish in the high jump.
