Golden Hawks take Clipper Cross Country Classic on tiebreaker

Jones steps up for Mid-Prairie girls

Amara Jones isn’t usually a factor in the scoring. The Mid-Prairie senior, who is working her way back after an injury, has typically finished eighth or ninth among her teammates this season.

But on Monday, her 18th place finish was critical, giving Mid-Prairie the tiebreaker over CCA for the girls team title at the Clipper Cross Country Classic.

Jones was one of several Golden Hawks that stepped up after Annika Poll was injured from a fall in the previous meet.

“You know, Clear Creek, this the best team they’ve had in years, maybe ever,” Mid-Prairie coach Mark Hostetler said. “And I didn’t think we had that much of a chance of beating them.”

CCA had four of the top eight finishers, but was tied with Mid-Prairie at 33 points after the first five runners had finished. With a time of 23:18, Jones finished two spots ahead of the Clippers’ sixth runner to give Mid-Prairie the win.

“She had been injured… and was coming back slow this year,” Hostetler said. “What a gutsy race she ran to end up being the sixth runner that won the trophy for the girls. So that was awesome tonight. A great, great meet for the girls.”

Even when Jones doesn’t factor into the scoring, her leadership is valuable to the Golden Hawks.

“She’s always honest, always upbeat, always positive,” Hostetler said.  “She’s the captain of the team as a senior, and she brings a lot of stability and strength so that everybody on the team is  just more relaxed and comfortable with what needs to be done.”

Danielle Hostetler finished first for Mid-Prairie with a winning time of 19:42. Abby Fleming was third (20:49), Phoebe Shetler finished seventh (21:34), and Greta Sieren stepped up to finish in the top 10 with a time of 22:26.

“Phoebe ran really well, and Greta ran really well,” Hostetler said. “And then I was surprised to see Dessa (Poll) — she has been improving a lot, but to see even more improvement today to finish 14th.”

Tabitha Evans finished 25th out of the 82 runners with a time of 24:33. Hannah Rodgers was 40th with a finish of 26:13, edging teammate Kali Miller by less than two tenths of a second.
