Golden Hawks soar into first place at home tournament

Mid-Prairie stayed home in Wellman to host a 13 school tournament, its final home event of its first season, and the Golden Hawks were able to score 138 points to win the team championship of the tournament on January 14.

In addition to winning the team championship of the tourney Mid-Prairie also produced a pair of individual champions on the day with Gabi Robertson finishing in first in the 100 lbs bracket and Ellie Brenneman taking the top spot in the 135 lbs bracket.

 Other top finishers for the Golden Hawks were Ashlee Farrier finishing as the runner up in the 125 lbs bracket, Mia Garvey finishing in second place in the 145 lbs bracket, and Grace Conway taking third place in the 145 lbs bracket. 

Robertson scored 20 team points after picking up three victories with her first win being by fall over Wilton’s Audrey Cummings in three minutes and 37 seconds. She kept on rolling on the second round earning another win by fall in three minutes and 52 seconds over Epworth, Western Dubuque’s Grace Murphy 

In her third and final match of the tournament Roberston won again by fall over Fort Madison’s Hailey Kemper in her fastest time of the tourney, two minutes and 30 seconds. These three straight victories placed her on top of the podium for the 100 lbs bracket. 

Brenneman scored a team high 26 team points for Mid-Prairie. An impressive amount of points that assisted greatly in the Golden Hawks winning the team championship of the tourney was accumulated by defeating three opponents. 

Her first round was a quarterfinal round and she was able to secure victory by fall in a lickity split manner, the match lasted just 21 seconds, over North Scott’s Allison Fowler and Brenneman won the semifinal round by way of forfeit over North Scott’s Mercie Hansel 

In the first place match Brenneman pinned her way to victory and a title with a win by fall in one minute and 13 seconds over another North Scott opponent Tabitha Skyles. 

Farrier started off the tournament with a win over West Liberty’s Ashley Gallardo by fall in 57 seconds. In the semifinal match she won again in a more lengthy match by fall over English Valleys-Tri County’s Anna Gorsh in three minutes and 43 seconds. 

In the first place match Brenneman was defeated by fall in one minute and 10 seconds by Wilton’s Hannah Rodgers. Overall she was able to secure 20 team points with her second place finish in the 125 lbs bracket. 

Garvey picked up a quick win by fall, 39 seconds, in her first round of the tournament and in the semifinal round she won a close match by decision, 7-6, against Pleasant Valley’s Kyna Moffit.

In the first place match Garvey was unable to claim the number one spot with a loss by fall in five minutes and 38 seconds by West Liberty’s Dionni Garcia-Vasquez. When it was all said and done Garvey was able to rack up 18 team points for the golden Hawks with her second place finish in the 145 lbs bracket.
