IOWA CITY
Mid-Prairie became the first Class 2A school in the state to reach 16 wins with a crushing 55-24 win over Iowa City Regina on Tuesday night.
The Golden Hawks (16-0) were so dominant on defense that they talked at halftime about holding a team under 20 points for the first time. It almost happened.
“They’re serious about it. They’re yelling at each other out there,” Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert said.
Regina senior forward Grant Rustan scored the only basket for the Regals in the first quarter. Regina didn’t score again until the opening minute of the second quarter when a basket by Carter Leick halted a 13-point Mid-Prairie run.
The Golden Hawks led 26-8 at halftime and cruised from there.
Mid-Prairie has given up an average of 41.8 points per game, which ranks the fourth best in Class 2A. Tuesday’s win marked the second consecutive night that the Golden Hawks held an opponent under 30.
The Golden Hawks forced Regina into 20 turnovers and held them to 28.2% shooting while outrebounding the Regals, 33-21.
“That’s our calling card,” Lambert said. “We’re going to play great defense and the offense will find itself. It’s what happened tonight.”
Mid-Prairie senior forward Carter Harmsen, who scored his 1,000th career point Monday against West Liberty, had his eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior center Ethan Kos added 12 points and 5 rebounds. Junior guard Alex Bean had a game-high 4 assists.
Rustan and Coltrae Kerschen each scored 6 points for Regina (3-13), which was swept by Mid-Prairie for the second consecutive season.
The Golden Hawks were up 45-19 in the fourth quarter when Harmsen went up for a slam dunk.
Mid-Prairie (16-0) plays a River Valley crossover game Friday night at Bellevue (7-8).
