WELLMAN
Mid-Prairie put on a volleyball show Tuesday night.
Maddie Nonnenmann, a senior, and Ella Groenewold, a junior, attacked the net and combined for 12 kills and 12 blocks. Landry Pacha, a junior, had a match-high 32 assists. Dakota Mitchell, a freshman, was all over the court for a match-high 22 digs.
The result was a 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of Iowa City Regina Catholic, and broke an 11-match losing streak to Regina.
The joy in the Golden Hawks’ victory was evident in their celebration.
“What can I say? Our girls came out on fire,” Mid-Prairie head coach Sherry Evans said. “We ran a faster offense, our passers were on it. Awesome job by Dakota Mitchell, just picking up little balls that a lot of girls can’t get to, and she did a good job at that. Props to our setter, Landry Pacha, who just did a really good job moving the ball around. I’m really proud of them.”
How special was this win for Mid-Prairie? The Golden Hawks hadn’t defeated Regina since 2014, when all of the current Golden Hawk players were still in elementary school. They hadn’t even won a set from Regina since 2019. Going back to 2008, Mid-Prairie had never swept the Regals.
The Golden Hawks rallied from three points down in the third set to complete the sweep. Once they got back into a 16-16 tie, the Golden Hawks scored 9 of the match’s final 12 points for the win.
The victory was the third in a row for Mid-Prairie (8-5), which is just one win short of equaling last year’s season win total with two weeks still to play. Dating back to 2008, this is Mid-Prairie’s first three-match win streak in the middle of the season in a match that didn’t involve tournaments.
“It’s just great to see how far our program has come and how good our team can play together for having such a new team,” Groenewold said. “To beat an opponent, who should have been such a close game.”
Maddie Nonnenmann led Mid-Prairie with 7 kills, and four other Golden Hawks delivered at least five kills, including Behla Schmidt with 6 and Groenewold with 5. Maddie Nonnenmann and Groenewold each had a team-high 6 blocks.
Pacha had a team-high 3 aces from the service line.
The Golden Hawks play at Tipton on Thursday night in a River Valley Conference match, then are in the New London Tournament on Saturday.
Expanded volleyball coverage is in The News this week and next week.
