FORT DODGE
For the third time in nine years, Mid-Prairie’s cross country teams finished one-two at Saturday’s Class 2A state championship meet in Fort Dodge.
The Golden Hawk girls, featuring just one senior runner in their lineup, won the 2A team championship for the sixth time in eight years.
A fourth-place individual finish by Golden Hawks senior Emmett Swartzentruber helped Mid-Prairie to a runner-up team finish in the boys race.
The one-two finish equaled one-two finishes by the Golden Hawks in 2017 and 2016. The girls won the 2017 title while the boys finished second; in 2016, the boys won a state title and the girls finished second.
“Gotta get them both first and first,” head coach Mark Hostetler said with a laugh afterward.
The state meet finished up a season in which both Golden Hawks teams won River Valley Conference and 2A district championships.
“Phenomenal team,” Swartzentruber said. “So glad we were able to go out this way.”
“This is pretty great,” said Dessa Poll, the only senior on the girls team.
Brooklyn Stutzman, a sophomore, posted a career-best eighth-place finish with a personal-best time of 19:20.6.
Marie Yoder, a sophomore at Hillcrest Academy, scored a career-best eighth-place finish in the 1A girls championship race. She had a time of 19:16.6.
“Marie has had a solid season, running consistently well throughout the season and capping off the season with her fastest race,” Hillcrest coach Marty Gingerich said.
