The Mid Prairie girls and boys golf team hosted their annual Winter Golf Clinic inside the high school indoor facility on Saturday, February 5th.

Twelve High Schools and 70 kids from as far away as Southeast Valley in Gowrie, Clark/Osceola, Davis County and Postville, along with many local high schools were in attendance.

PGA professionals Jim Dickerson from Finkbine Golf Course, Jeff Schmid from Brown Deer Golf Club, Austin Kopp owner of Golfletics Performance Studio and UNI Men’s and Women’s golf coach John Bermel shared their instruction expertise with the kids for over four hours. Aspects from set up and fundamentals, putting, chipping and full swing were the main focus.

“The amount of knowledge these professionals have is unbelievable,” said Mid-Prairie girls golf coach Tracy McArtor.

“Their personal accolades and accomplishments on and off the golf course is amazing.”

Jim Dickerson coached at Cornell College and is the director of instruction for the GIVE foundation(Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere). He is also the recipient of the PGA of America’s Patriot Award in 2014.

Jeff Schmid was the 2020 Iowa PGA Senior Player of the year. Schmid and  Bermel have both played in numerous PGA tour and Senior Tour events in their careers. Austin Kopp has built the Golfletics Performance Studio into a successful instruction, club fitting and golf fitness business in a short period of time.

“The fact that these gentlemen are willing to give up a day to come help our kids be better players and us coaches better at what we do is so appreciated,” McArtor said.

“It’s nice to have a day before season starts that the kids can get some hands on instruction both individually and in a group setting.  It gets them thinking about season coming up and gets them excited.”
