The calendar rocked forward six years on a rainy night for the Mid-Prairie softball team.

Dodging a thunderstorm that created a delay in the middle of the game, the Golden Hawks offense scored an impressive 16-0, three-inning victory over Bellevue in a game that was played June 17 at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.

The Golden Hawks completed their biggest offensive output since June 2015, when they drilled Camanche, 19-1.

The victory over Bellevue was the fourth of the season for Mid-Prairie, doubling its win total from a year ago.

“The thing we’re doing right now, we’re challenging the kids to come out and continue to play at a high level,” Mid-Prairie head coach Matt Hoeppner said. “We’re playing a good team, we’re playing at a high level, and they took care of business.”

The victory came between doubleheader losses to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, the fifth-ranked team in Class 3A, and Davenport West, a rising team in Class 5A.

The Golden Hawks’ 11-hit attack was led by Madeline Schrader, Myah Lugar, Hannah Sellers and Katelyn Schneider, the first four hitters in the lineup who had two hits apiece. Every Golden Hawk starter reached base.

Sellers and Brenna Jehle each drove in three runs. Designated runner Sophia Baker scored three runs.

Lugar, a senior pitcher, struck out three and gave up four hits.

After scoring three runs in the opening inning and six runs in the rain-delayed second, the Golden Hawks finished the game out with a seven-run rally in the third inning.

Wilton 8, Mid-Prairie 2

Landry Pacha had two hits in Game 2, and eighth-grader Dakota Mitchell was the only Golden Hawk to get a hit in both games of a doubleheader loss to Wilton on Monday night.

The Beavers (16-3, 11-0 River Valley South) are ranked No. 2 in Class 2A behind North Linn.

Madeline Schrader and Katelyn Schneider scored for Mid-Prairie in Game 2.

Davenport West 11, M-P 1

Davenport West 13, M-P 1

Freshman catcher Hannah Sellers had two hits in the first game of the doubleheader played June 18 in Davenport, but the Golden Hawks dropped a pair of games to Class 5A’s Davenport West.

The Golden Hawks had the bases loaded three times in Game 1, scoring once on a bases-loaded walk by Dakota Mitchell.

Baker scored both Mid-Prairie runs and had a pair of stolen bases.

Pacha had a hit in Game 1, and Schrader, Schneider and Baker each had singles in Game 2.

Davenport West (13-6) struck quickly in both games. The Falcons scored three runs in the first inning of Game 1 and seven runs in the first inning of Game 2. Rylee Rommel, a senior, had four hits, including three in Game 1.

E-B-F 6, Mid-Prairie 2

E-B-F 3, Mid-Prairie 2

The Golden Hawks had the bases loaded in the final inning of Game 2 of the doubleheader played June 16, but Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont pitcher Molly Shafer was able to finish out the win with a complete-game, 3-hitter.

The Golden Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning against the No. 5-ranked Rockets. Pacha and Mitchell reached base and scored. Both Pacha and Mitchell had two hits in the game.

The Rockets answered with a three-run rally in the fourth inning.

Schrader, a sophomore outfielder, had a game-best three hits in Game 1. Mitchell and Brittany Kinsinger scored runs.

E-B-F scored single runs in each of the first four innings to take a 4-1 lead, then added two more runs in the sixth inning.

Mount Pleasant 4, Mid-Prairie 0

Mount Pleasant broke a 23-game losing streak (dating back to last year), blanking the Golden Hawks 4-0 in a game played June 15 at Mount Pleasant.

Sellers and Jehle were the only Golden Hawks to get hits off Mount Pleasant freshman pitcher Madison Helling.

Lugar pitched six innings and struck out five.

Ahead 1-0, the Panthers scored three runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. Grace Kelley had two hits and drove in two runs.

A 10-game week for the Golden Hawks includes a home game Thursday night against Anamosa at Mid-Prairie Middle School.
