Eight first-place finishes propel Lady Lions to Ekstrand Relays crown

WAYLAND

Not letting the rain or weather delays slow them down one bit, it was a record breaking day for Lady Lions track and field as they ran away with the Class B team title at the WACO hosted Ekstrand Relays last Thursday.

“I was very pleased with our performance at WACO,” Lone Tree girls track and field head coach Chad Shield said about his team’s first place finish. “To come out on top in a large meet like WACO, we need to have contributions from everyone on the team up and down the lineup and we did just that.”

In an eight team field, Lone Tree came out on top of the Class B Division with a first place score of 108.

In the middle of the meet there was a 45-minute lighting delay but this lull in competition did not break the concentration of the Lady Lions who came away with eight first place finishes, 18 new personal bests, and two school records broken.

“I am so proud of the way they responded to adversity,” coach Shield said. “Once the meet was resumed, they picked up right where they left off. It is so enjoyable having a front row seat to watch them compete.”

Relay teams once again proved to be a strength for the Lady Lions and in the sprint medley relay the team of Vivian Zaruba, Ava Christofferson, Rylee Shield, and Addison McCullough not only placed first in 1:52.98 they also set a new school record.

Other relay teams to place first for Lone Tree was the 4x800m team in 12:04.13 (Abby Zaruba, Evelyn Mueller, Dalanie Graap, McCullough), the 4x200m team in 1:49.38 (Rylee Shield, Vivian Zaruba, Ava Christofferson, McCullough), and the same team placing first in the 4x100m in 51.99.

In the 400m Ryle Shield sprinted to first place as the senior crossed the finish line in 1:00.27, breaking the school record which was set previously in 2001 by current assistant coach Ashley Zaruba.

The field events also featured plenty of impressive Lady Lion performances. Christofferson leaped to first in the long jump with 16-08. Hayden Yoder placed first in the shot put and the discus with throws of 33-05.25 and 102-08 respectively.

“Hayden Yoder continues to display her dominance in shot and discus placing first in both,” coach Shield said. “Ava Christofferson matched her PR in long jump finishing first in a very talented field.”

Shifting over to the boys results, the Lions earned 45 team points to place sixth in the Class B Division. Winning the team title was Sigoruney with a score of 138.

Showing off his speed, it was double gold night for Dom Garcia as the Lone Tree junior raced to the finish line first in the 100m (11.66) and the 200m (23.57).

In the 4x200m the relay team of Gray Spilman, Cade Willoz, Emmett Burke, and Garcia raced to the runner-up spot in 1:35.54.

Also competing in the Class B Division, the Raven girls ended the night a team score of 90 to earn the runner-up spot

It was a gold performance for Rya Scott in the 200m as the standout junior conquered a field of 15 to take first in 27.22, just edging out HLV-TC’s Ema Roberts second place performance of 27.23.

Rya Scott also placed third in both the 400m (1:03.56) and the long jump (16-00).

Another Raven to claim gold for was Marie Yoder who outpaced the competition in the 3000m with a first place time of 11:30.22. In the same event teammate Siena Stanerson placed fourth in 11:58.80.

Yoder also impressed in the 1500m, claiming second place in 5:26.41 and Staneson earned another fourth place finish in 5:37.35.

Hillcrest also had two relays tams secure runner-up finishes with the 4x100m team (Rya Scott, Stavia Miller, Niva Helmuth, Morgyn Nafziger) ending with a time of 53.72 and the 4x200m team (Miller, Helmuth, Karina Bourha, Delaney Shaw) reaching a season best time of 1:54.53.

On the boys side, the Ravens captured 37 team points to finish seventh in the final standings.

It was another great jumping day for Owen Scott who placed first in the long jump, even when compared against the Class A Division, with a leap of 21-09.00. Owen Scott was also the runner-up in the 100m (11.72).

The 200m also featured a Raven as the runner-up as Kayden Esteller placed second in 24.49 and in the 3200m it was a third place finish for Jeremiah Danker who crossed the finish line in 12:43.20.
