Mid-Prairie Community School District Board of Education members gathered Wednesday night prepared for a schematic design presentation by Carl A. Nelson and Shive-Hattery for the additions to East Elementary and Middle schools; however, they were disappointed.
The July 14 meeting was intended to be a training session with the Iowa Association of School Boards only, but the design presentation was later added to the agenda. Because the school board will not have a second meeting in July, the design and architecture teams aimed to have their presentation prepared in a shorter time frame. In the end, this was not achieved.
A schematic design consists of a rough construction drawing and cost estimates for a project. In the case of the building additions that have been approved for East Elementary and Middle schools, unexpected issues have cropped up as the design and construction teams evaluated the existing buildings. A sinking floor, water damaged brickwork, and the possible need for a fire road are some of the issues that require additional time to solve and cost estimate properly.
The schematic design presentation has been rescheduled for the Board’s August 8 meeting. The construction project is not expected to be delayed as a result.
