PLEASANTVILLE
What served as the season finale for the Highland boys cross country team, the Huskies took the long trek to Pleasantville to compete in a 1A District meet on Oct. 24.
Not bothered by the long drive it took to reach the Pleasantville Golf & Country Club, the Highland junior trio of Chase Hickenbottom, Jack Krotz, and Brayden Zywiec all ended their seasons with excellent performances.
“I was worried about the two-hour drive affecting the boys, but they all bested or came very close to the best time of the season or even their whole high school running career,” Highland cross country coach Angela Strobel said.
“As a coach, I want that final meet to showcase all the hard work and effort the runners put in over the course of the season and I got just that! All three boys ran great races.”
In a field of 85, this state qualifier race was filled with tough competition, but the Huskies showed great fight and the junior trio battled their way to reach some new personal best.
Leading the way for Highland was Krotz, who ran a career best time of 21:07 to place 51st. All throughout this season Krotz has been Highland’s best placing runner and this district meet was no different.
Also running a career best time was Hickenbottom, reaching the finish line in 22:26 to place 62nd. Arriving right after him was teammate Zywiec, who nearly reached a career best time with 22:34 to place 63rd. Zywiec reached his career best earlier this season in Mediapolis with a time of 22:13.
With the top ten individual runners and the teams who placed first and second being the way to qualify for state, Highland’s season came to an end at Pleasantville.
“Overall, I’m grateful for the opportunity to coach such hardworking and goal-oriented kids,” coach Strobel said.
“We had a very small team of three high school boys, two high school girls, and two junior high girls, and two junior high boys this year, but the atmosphere at practice was always positive and supportive. I’m so proud of all the Huskies that ran this season. They represented their school well!”
