Callahan and Yoder finish on top of the podium at Colton Allen Memorial Tournament

In just his first week as a varsity wrestler, Mid-Prairie sophomore Quinn Callahan won all five of his matches Saturday to join senior Mose Yoder on the top of the podium at the Colton Allen Memorial Tournament.

Callahan matched up with teammate Terry Bordenave in the first round of the six-team round robin tournament and trailed 2-1 late in the second period. He got a critical takedown with 12 seconds left in the period.

“I just knew I had to get after it and score points,” Callahan said. “Coach (Jared) Duwa, before the match, said that I’ve got to get to my offense. So I wanted to get to my offense right away.”

It went to overtime, where Callahan again trailed by one point in the closing seconds before scoring with a reversal to win the match.

“I just kept my head down, kept grinding,” Callahan said about the overtime win over his practice partner. “It’s a really competitive relationship between me and him — always battling it out.”

Callahan finished the day with three pins in the first period.

“Quinn Callahan had a great day,” Mid-Prairie coach Randy Billups said. “That was his first tournament as a varsity wrestler, and he defended his wrestle off that he had won the other day. So a super job out of Quinn. He was aggressive, and he was going after it.”

Bordenave won his other four matches to finish second at 220 pounds. He has a record of 9-2 for the season.

Jaxsen Timmerman had a pair of victories in the 220-pound bracket as well.

“You know, not really being a varsity wrestler my entire life, coming out here getting two wins, getting fourth place is not too bad,” said the Golden Hawk senior. “It feels awesome, actually.”

He pinned Benton Community freshman Lane Wauters in 73 seconds to open the day. He earned a 9-2 decision over CCA’s Carson Bromwell in the third round.

“He hit a shot on me and I snapped him down, hit the reverse, got him on his back and got some back points,” Timmerman said.

Yoder won both of his matches by first-period fall to finish first at 120 pounds.

“I felt good wrestling in both my matches, felt confident in what I was doing and what I was putting out there on the mat,” Yoder said.

After a quick takedown and pin in his first match, he faced Benton Community freshman Weston Kaestner with an opportunity to take first.

“He’s a little stronger, a little bigger guy,” Yoder said. “I just had to stay on my offense.”

Yoder built a 4-1 lead with a pair of takedowns and pinned his opponent with 18 seconds remaining in the first period to secure first place.

The plan is for Yoder to drop to 113 next week, according to Billups.

“We’re getting ready to go down a weight,” he said. There are quite a few of them that had it in the plan all along, and we were just kind of waiting. Some of them couldn’t because of body fat. so they were staying up to fill in some weights so we didn’t have holes. But next week is the time.I think they’ll be able to compete better. It looks like we’re a little small sometimes when we get out there, but hopefully that will help.”

Owen Trimpe and Burke Berry each went 2-1 to finish second at 170 and 285 pounds. Mason Howe was 2-2 to take third at 126. Kaden Meader was also 2-2 to finish fourth at 182.

Dom Shively, Landry Gingerich, Peyton Fox, and Dalton Miller each picked up a win on Saturday as well.

Clear Creek Amana topped Benton Community for the team title by two points, finishing on top with 146.5. Mid-Prairie edged Mediapolis for third place by one point 87-86.

“Benton had some tough kids,” Billups said. “Clear Creek Amana had some tough wrestlers. So we’ve got work to do and we’re going to keep going after it. Nobody has given up, they just keep coming back every day.”
