Burton repeats as long jump champ

Sarah Burton jumped over 17 feet again on Thursday to claim a conference title in the long jump for a second straight season.

The Highland sophomore jumped over a foot farther than any of her competitors in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North or South divisions with a leap of 17-1.25. She also helped the Huskies take second in both the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays along with teammates Gracy Prybil, Katelyn Waters, and Mackenzie McFarland.

“The competition was great for us,” coach Angie Strobel said. “It’s always a benefit to run against fast teams. It’s the time in the season where you’re looking for your best times. Great competition helps with that.”

Burton and McFarland finished fourth and sixth in a very competitive 100-meter dash and Waters took third in the 200 with a new season-best time of 29.16.

“Katelyn Waters ran a good open 200 for us, Jess Kraus helped the team with a third place in the discus, and Sarah Burton dominated in the LJ,” Strobel said. “Our girls shuttle came home with a bronze and our 4x 100 and 4 x 200 performed well.”

Courtney Chalupa and Adelynn Kleopfer picked up points in the 100-meter hurdles finishing fifth and seventh in the event. Hailey Netser also earned points with a fifth-place finish in the high jump and an eighth place finish in the 1500.

Strobel was also very happy with the performance of junior Avery Pierson.

“She stepped up and stepped in when other runners weren’t able to run tonight and still ran a PR in her 4 x 800 and open 800,” Strobel said. “I’m super proud of how she’s improved this season. She’s a hard worker and deserves some recognition.”

The Highland girls finished fifth out of nine teams in the SEISC North with 73 points. The Highland boys finished eighth with 34 points, led by senior Devin Lovetinsky who took third in the shot put with a throw of 45-9.25.

The Highland 4x200-meter relay of Brenton Bonebrake, Logan Bonebrake, Tyler Thompson and Connor Grinstead finished second with a time of 1:37.80 and the same four runners took third in the sprint medley. Grinstead finished sixth in the open 200 with a time of 23.74.

Nik Maloney took eighth in the open 800 and Nicolas Oraino was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Huskies will be at the state-qualifying meet in Lisbon on Thursday, May 12. Burton is one of three athletes in 1A to jump over 17 feet this season with a PR of 17-7. Alburnett junior Lacey Neighbor, who will also be at the Lisbon meet, is one of the others with a long of 17-05.25 on April 12.

There will be one automatic qualifier in each event from each of the 10 1A state-qualifying meet with 14 additional qualifiers based on time or distance.
