Youthful Huskies show promise

The Highland Huskies softball team was getting hot at precisely the right time.

The Huskies had won four of five games, averaging nearly 10 runs a game in those four victories. Dani Laughlin, a freshman, had 12 hits in those four wins and sophomore pitcher Grace Batcheller piled up 15 strikeouts and three wins.

Get the picture?

The Huskies’ only losses in the last two weeks of the season were both by one run, and came to Lisbon pitcher Ryleigh Allgood, a freshman who ranks No. 6 in the state with 17 wins, and to Lone Tree’s Abby Buckman, who had thrown a no-hitter two days before she struck out 10 Highland batters in a 2-1 victory.

Highland finished its season with a 9-7 record, just two wins away from the Class 1A state tournament.

Given the youth of its starting lineup, that state appearance could come next year.

Head coach Carrie Wieland’s squad included three sophomores, two freshmen and a pair of eighth graders.
