Wellman closes skating rink through December

The Wellman City Council voted to close the Wellman skating rink to both public skating and private parties through December 2020, following discussion on the risks of COVID-19 contagion and the most recent recommendations by State of Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

In early November, council members had considered re-opening the rink to the public with the implementation of policies and procedures that would reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19.

But with the rising number of COVID-19 cases and Gov. Kim Reynold’s latest Public Health Disaster proclamation, council members concluded that it was in the public’s best interest to further delay reopening the skating rink.

Mayor Ryan Miller noted that in Section 6, Paragraph C, the governor’s proclamation from Nov. 16 specifically prohibits youth sports and recreational activities, except for high school, college or professional sports. Because the public skates are popular with young teens and draw a sizeable crowd, the prohibitions would apply to rink.

Regarding the City of Wellman, council members agreed to follow the governor’s recommendations and plan to issue a Mayoral proclamation encouraging residents to observe the suggested guidelines.
