Of the 31,404 students who participated in Secretary of State Paul Pate’s Iowa Youth Straw Poll, 55.37% of them voted for President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Joseph R. Biden and Kamala Harris came in second with 31.89% of the vote and Kanye West and Michelle Tidball followed in third place with 8.65%.

Students voted in the straw poll in the week before the Nov. 3 general election. The Iowa Youth Straw Poll is open to students of every grade level and youth civic organizations.

Participating schools in Washington County closely reflected the statewide average, with 54.65% voting for Trump, 28.29% for Biden and 8.14% for West. Johnson County showed 62.96% voted for Biden, 23.32% for Trump and 7.58% for West.

Students also cast ballots in the US Representative Race, with Ashley Hinson (17.53%), Randy Feenstra (16.87%), Abby Finkenauer (14.7%), Marianette Miller-Meeks (11.59%) and Rita Hart (10.17%) making up the top-five.

In the U.S. Senator race, Joni Ernst came out on top with 53.09% of the vote, followed by Greenfield with 37.5%.

“This is a fun, hands-on learning experience that hopefully will create a lifelong interest in civics and elections for these students,” Secretary Pate said in a press release.

The 2016 Iowa Youth Straw Poll showed Trump defeating Hillary Clinton by 10 points. The youth poll accurately reflected the outcome of every Iowa congressional race except one.
