Trump dominates local Republican caucuses

Posted

While Democrats packed into the Lone Tree High School cafeteria with 113 caucus-goers, Republicans sat comfortably in a classroom.

There were 21 attending the caucus. All 21 cast ballots for President Trump.

The turnout, though much smaller than 2016 when there were numerous Republican candidates vying for the nomination, was larger than precinct Chairman Terry Kruse expected.

“I think many people wanted to show their support for the president,” he said.

That scenario was repeated throughout the area Monday evening.

In Washington County, Trump received 315 votes, while challengers William Weld and Joe Walsh picked up two votes and one vote respectively.

In the Kalona GOP caucus, there were 24 people, 21 in Riverside and 55 in Wellman.

Republican caucuses are run differently than the Democratic caucuses. While Democrats publicly commit to a candidate, Republicans cast secret ballots that are then tabulated and reported to the statewide organization.
