The signs, they are a changing

A several-month-long project in the city of Kalona is nearing completion.

In the spring, city workers began the task of replacing every street and road sign in the city.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said that he expects the project to be completed later this month.

“The purpose of this project was to replace every sign in town,” Schlabaugh said.

The project includes directional street signs – known as blades – as well as stop and yield signs.

Schlabaugh explained that many of the signs were becoming hard to see, especially at night.

“The reflective part wears out and they were just not as vibrant,” he said.

The new signs have the most reflective material available.

The street signs include quilt blocks.

“We wanted to get signs in line with what Kalona is all about,” Schlabaugh said.

The city expects to receive shipment of the last batch of signs around the end of next week.

All the signs were made by Iowa Prison Industries.
