The staff of The News was delighted and proud to be awarded in six categories of the 2024 Iowa Better Newspaper Contest on Thursday. Three first place plaques now grace their office: Best Sports Columnist (Paul Bowker), Best Continuing Coverage, and Coverage of Agriculture. In addition, they received certificates for Best Sports Section, 2nd place; Coverage of Business, 2nd place; and Best Personality Feature Story (Cheryl Allen), 3rd place.
Attending the Iowa Newspaper Association Convention and Awards Ceremony on Feb. 8 in Des Moines were publisher Ron Slechta, bookkeeper Beryl Marner, news editor Cheryl Allen, sports editor Giovanni Coronel, and graphic designer Morgan Dakarian. Staying home to keep the office open and cover sporting events that day were sports columnist Paul Bowker, reporter TJ Rhodes, and office manager Colette Yoder.
As aways, the staff owes a debt of gratitude to proofreader Nancy Swartzendruber for making them look good.
