Streets are crumbling in Wellman subdivision

Wellman city officials are still seeking answers as to why some streets in the Deer Meadow Subdivision are crumbling.

City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said that a contractor working on some cul-de-sac repairs found that the street had no base under the concrete.

“When the subdivision was done, there was no re-rods or base under the concrete,” Litwiller said. “It was just sand.”

Some recent construction on Sixth Avenue North brought to light issues with some of the street bases.

The streets were crumbling under the weight of trucks at construction sites.

Litwiller said that there could be some voids under the streets where sand had washed away.

This summer, the council approved some repairs to cul-de-sacs on Brown Deer Court and White Tail Court.

She said that the contractor is nearly done with work on the first cul-de-sac and will look at a second one this week.

She added that a third cul-de-sac in the subdivision is also starting to show some damage.

“We hope to have a report for Monday’s City Council meeting,” Litwiller said. “We’ll decide where to go from there.”
