State legislators introduce idea allowing Hills to join a new school district

HILLS

Joining a new school district remains on the table for the Hills Community after losing their elementary just a week ago.

State Senator Dawn Driscoll, State Representative Heather Hora and Lone Tree Superintendent Tyler Hotz joined the Hills City Council on Friday night to gauge interest of Hills joining the Lone Tree Community School District.

The idea is early in development, but it could be implemented as early as next school year.

In order to happen, both areas would need to vote in agreement.

In regard to the Hills Elementary building, the legislators were not sure if they could retain the building from the Iowa City CSD, especially since Iowa City intends to keep the property.

Hills Mayor Tim Kemp believes the whole process happened very fast. Kemp wants to gather public interest before making any decisions with the council. Kemp also believes the community could join Lone Tree even if the Hills Elementary building is not retained.

All possibilities are truly on the table for the Hills community.

The Hills City Council will entertain the idea at their next meeting, slated for Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m. in the community center.

See next week's edition of The News, dated Thursday, April 11, for the complete story.
