Skeeter the Clown visits Wellman library

Children visiting the Wellman Scofield Public Library Friday morning were treated to a little circus preview.

Skeeter the Clown of the Culpepper Merriweather Circus entertained the kids, while telling them about the circus coming to Wellman on Aug. 20.

“You can come out at 9:30 circus morning and watch us raise the big top up,” Skeeter said. “Nowadays, a lot of people don’t know what a big top is.”

Skeeter also told the children that there is a free tour on circus morning following the tent-raising.

“People can stay for the free tour where you can actually meet our lions and tigers,” she said. “We have a beautiful Parisian stallion that is over 18 hands high, 1,500 pounds, who performs with a miniature horse that’s only 26 inches.”

Skeeter is one of two clowns with the circus.

“You’ll see Leo, our other funny circus clown,” Skeeter said. “Leo and I both graduated from Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey’s Clown College, which is no more now. (Leo) was 18 when he went. I was 28.”

Skeeter talked about how the circus is one big family.

“We have two ring-mistresses,” Skeeter said. “One is the niece, and one is the aunt. The niece is also my boss’ wife.”
