The addition of two young agents to the staff of Southeast Iowa Insurance, with offices in Kalona and Wellman, was announced this week by owner Shawn Powell.

“We are pleased to bring on board the next generation of agents who are people-oriented and want to serve our customers and community,” Powell said.

Joining Southeast Iowa Insurance is Powell’s son Canaan, who is a risk advisor for home, auto, farm and commercial insurance. Dallas K. Nye is a risk advisor for life, annuities, disability, long term care and group benefits.

“I coached both Canaan and Dallas in youth baseball, basketball and football for four years,” Shawn said. “They were good team members then and I am looking forward to them being good team members here at Southeast Iowa Insurance.”

“We are excited to have quality young people working for us,’ he added, “and they are looking forward to becoming involved in the communities of Kalona and Wellman.”

Canaan is a 2014 graduate of Mid-Prairie High School and earned a degree in paramedics from the University of Iowa in 2019.  Before joining the family insurance business, Canaan worked for CARE Ambulance Service, Iowa City and is currently a volunteer with the Williamsburg EMS service.  He and his wife Jordan, who works for the University of Iowa Hospitals, currently live in Williamsburg. They have purchased property in Southtown and plan to build there within the next few years.

“I really enjoy working with people, and helping them acquire their insurance needs and reaching their goals,” Canaan said.

When he isn’t working or volunteering, Canaan enjoys spending time with family, watching the Hawkeyes, golfing and boating .

Dallas Nye grew up near Frytown where his parents Tom and Shari Nye still live. He graduated from IMS (now Hillcrest Academy) in 2014 and earned a degree in marketing and business in 2018. Before joining Southeast Iowa Insurance, he worked as a customer service representative in the transportation department for Alliant Energy.

“I am a people oriented person and I am really looking forward to working with area people to help them reach their financial goals,” Dallas commented. “I enjoy playing in a basketball league at the YMCA in Kalona and playing golf.” He added that he enjoys following the Hawkeyes and UNI Panthers.

Dallas is currently living in Coralville. His long term plans includes raising a family in the Kalona Community.

Canaan and Dallas join coach Shawn Powell’s team of agents and fellow employees: Crop insurance specialists Jared Waters, John Armstrong, and Zach Bendixen; and agents Mark Hoffman, Jeff Spenner, Dawn Fisher, Angela Stutsman and Marshel Williams, plus bookkeeper Mariah Lewis.
