Hillcrest Academy senior Sarena Gerber earned Academic All-State honors from the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, showing off a mix of athletic and academic achievement.
Gerber was the only runner from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference to earn the honor. Requirements include being a senior, a 3.8 grade-point average, a score of at least 28 on the ACT and finishing in the top 30 at a state-qualifying meet.
Gerber checked off the academic requirements and finished 27th at the qualifying meet in Iowa City in 22:48. Gerber finished in 26th her junior season.
Her fastest time of the season was a 22:34 that she ran at the Mediapolis meet toward the end of the season. She improved from a 24:59 in the first meet of the season to that time to consistently be the second runner for an improved Hillcrest Academy team.
Gerber was named to the 2017 and 2018 All-Academic list for the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
