Could a roundabout be coming to the intersection of Highways 1 and 22?
Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said that he was recently approached by planners with the Fairfield office of the Iowa Department of Transportation about possibly converting the four-way stop into a roundabout.
“How they have (Highways) 1 and 22 painted was somewhat of a test they wanted to try out, and it didn’t really do what they wanted it to do,” Schlabaugh told the City Council at its Sept. 3 meeting. “They’re going to restripe. In that process as a staff, they asked ‘What if we proposed a roundabout with what is already there?’”
Schlabaugh explained that installing a roundabout at the intersection would allow the DOT to reduce the speed limit coming into town.
“The caveat they threw is if they’re allowed to do this, it would give them the ability to lessen the speed coming into town to the levels we proposed,” he said. “Because of this, they can justify it.”
