Riverside VFW sponsors multiple scholarship opportunities for K-12

Riverside Post #6414 VFW and VFW Auxiliary are sponsoring the annual National VFW and VFW Auxiliary Scholarship Awards.

The Voice of Democracy is the Veterans of Foreign Wars premier scholarship program where students, grades 9-12, compete by writing and recording an audio essay on a patriotic theme. The 2021-2022 Theme is “America: Where do we go from here?”

The Patriot’s Pen is a youth essay competition for students, grades 6-8. The 2021-2022 theme is “How Can I Be a Good American?”

Both contests have a deadline of October 31, 2021, to the VFW Post. Both contests are open to students enrolled in public, private, parochial and homeschool.

The National VFW Auxiliary sponsors The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, a scholarship contest that recognizes artists and encourages patriotism for students in grades 9-12, with a local deadline of March 31, 2022.

Two-dimensional art in watercolor, pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon, acrylic, pen, ink, oil, makers or other media may be used and three-dimensional art can be paper, paper-mâché, pottery, metal work, fabric wood, etc.

Illustrating America, an art contest for students in grades K-8, judged on patriotic theme is also available for our youth.

“Get Excited for the Red, White and Blue” is a national anthem singing contest for youth in grades K-12. Video of contestant’s solo vocal performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” must be recorded between July 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022.  Deadline to local VFW Auxiliary is March 31, 2022.  Additional information can be found at vfwauxiliary.org on the Scholarships webpage.

Elementary Essay Contests sponsored by the Iowa VFW Auxiliary are also open to youth in grades 3, 4 and 5. Grade 3 theme is “I Love America Because…”; grade 4 theme is “What is your favorite Patriotic Holiday and why?”; grade 5 theme is “I’m Proud to be an American because…”.  Rules will be provided to the Highland Elementary Center staff at the beginning of the school year.
