A Riverside man said he was in disbelief when a store clerk told him he’d won a $150,000 Powerball prize.
Larry Simon, 54, matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball in the drawing on May 25, 2019.
His initial $50,000 prize was tripled because he opted for the $1 Power Play add-on, which multiples non-jackpot prize amounts by up to 10 times.
Simon purchased his ticket at Casey’s in Riverside and returned to the store after the drawing to check his tickets.
“I was kind of in awe when it came up that it was a winner and they told me what I won,” said Simon, who claimed his prize on Tuesday at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids. “I thought they were pretty much joking with me.”
He said that news of the big win spread quickly in Riverside, a town of about 1,000 people.
“I’m from a small town so the rumor mill has gone through where, you know, that I won or I didn’t win,” said Simon, who plans to use part of his winnings to pay bills. “So, I just kind of kept them guessing until today.”
