The Riverside City Council approved grants totaling more than $12,000 at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, August 16.

Two business district grants, funded through hotel-motel tax funds, include $5,412 for Clean on Greene, a laundromat and car wash business located on Greene Street, and $4,735 for Riverside Auto Spa, a car wash located on Highway 22.

Improvement projects at Clean on Greene include exterior painting, the installation of a green awning and security cameras, replacement of stair risers and drainage improvements. The total project cost is more than $15,000, according to the application filed by owners Kevin and Jill Marshek.

Planned work at Riverside Auto Spa includes upgraded lighting, a new exterior sign and the replacement of a door. The total cost of the project is more than $12,000.

The council also approved a residential grant of $2,500 for Steve and Marcy Musser. The work at their home included new shutters, a new exterior door and the replacement of two garage overhead doors. The project was completed in July.

The deadline for applying for a grant in the 2022-23 fiscal year is December 1, 2021.

The board also approved a bid of $2,000 by Big Iron Welding of Iowa to repair the bed of a city truck and also moved ahead with the planned upgrade of a lift station.

The board set a work session for September 23, at which council members will consider how to spend more than $150,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds over the next two years. Riverside will receive $76,151 in 2021 and 2022 — the city’s portion of federal funds created by ARPA legislation to help businesses and residents recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

A proposed community center will be discussed at another work session, scheduled for September 30.

The next meeting of the council will be held Tuesday, September 7, at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The meeting was moved back one day due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 6.
