The City of Riverside unanimously approved a contract to increase its annual contribution to the Kalona Public Library Monday night, Jan. 4.
The contract raised Riverside’s annual contribution to the library by 3%, up to a total of $21,582. In exchange, the library will maintain all existing services for Riverside residents and take steps to increase its presence in the town.
“They’re renewing what they currently have as well as adding in-person programming… such as Story Time and Toddler Time and author visits,” KPL Youth Director Olivia Kahler said in December. “Otherwise, they’re just renewing everything they already get.”
The move comes two weeks after Kahler and KPL Director Trevor Sherping proposed the increase in a presentation that council members called “energetic” and “motivated.”
“I was very impressed by their presentation and it seems like they’re doing great things,” Councilperson Edgar McGuire said before making a motion to approve the contract.
Councilperson Jeanine Redlinger said she was interested in the library’s efforts to develop “mobile library options,” like a bookmobile.
“They talked about how they felt they needed to have more outreach programs in the city of Riverside from them,” Councilperson Andy Rodgers said at the meeting. “That’s one of their priorities they’re going to try and work on through COVID.”
