Relay for Life to host drive-thru ceremony on Oct. 11

Washington County Relay for Life is hosting a drive-thru, no-contact luminaria ceremony on Oct. 11 in lieu of the traditional relay, which was cancelled in June.

This year marks the 20th anniversary for Relay for Life in Washington County, and even though the pandemic has caused a reduction in fundraising, the organization is committed to continue offering support to cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones, as well as remembering those who have lost their lives to cancer.

“During this difficult time, we know cancer doesn’t stop or it doesn’t go away, and neither will we,” the organization said in a press release. “Even though we can’t be face-to-face or walk side-by-side, we are committed to continuing to fight cancer head-on and hope that you will stand together with us, even though we are apart.”

The luminaria ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 11 will be held at the Washington County Fairgrounds from 3-5 p.m. While previous ceremonies have been held at dusk, this year’s will be held in daylight to make reading the honorees’ names easier.

To purchase a luminary, send the name you would like printed on the bag and whether it is in honor, remembrance, or support with $5 to P.O. Box 384, Washington, IA 52353. Alternatively, you can visit the Relay for Life of Washington County on Facebook to print a form to mail in. The deadline to submit a luminary is Oct. 6.

There is no charge to drive through the luminaria and attendees are welcome to drive through more than once. Enter through the fairground entrance on Highway 1 and exit onto 250th Street (Old Highway 92) by the Washington Community Center.

In case of inclement weather, an alternative date is set for Oct. 18.
