A sweep ended the streak.
Led by Esther Hughes’ four kills, HIllcrest Academy’s volleyball team defeated Midland this past Saturday to end a losing streak that dated back to October 2018.
The Ravens won the match by scores of 21-17 and 21-15, halting a streak that had reached 37 losses.
The victory came in a tournament hosted by Wilton, and was one of five matches Saturday for the Ravens. HIllcrest, which hosts Wapello on Thursday night, has already tripled the number of set wins it had last year in an 0-27 season.
The Ravens nearly topped Lone Tree in its home opener on Sept. 3, winning the first two sets and then losing the last three sets to the Lions. They also have scored set wins over Louisa-Muscatine and Mediapolis.
Malia Sedlacek, a senior, and Sophie Marshall, a senior, added two kills in the win against Midland (2-9). Norah Yoder, a junior, had a team-high six assists.
In addition to the win over Midland, the Ravens were swept by Winfield-Mt. Union, Mt. Pleasant, Lisbon and host Wilton.
Hughes, a junior, had a team-high 12 kills over the five matches. Marshall had 10 kills, including 6 against Lisbon.
Yoder had 15 assists over five matches, including 7 against Lisbon.
Esther Hughes had a team-high 10 kills, but the Ravens fell to Mediapolis in the Bulldogs’ home opener.
Mediapolis won by scores of 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 25-14.
Mediapolis freshman Haley Steffener had a match-high 13 kills.
Grace Miller led a strong HIllcrest performance at the serving line with five aces. Yanitza Gutierrez had four aces.
Gutierrez added 10 assists and Norah Yoder had eight.
Esther Hughes had a team-high 10 kills for the Ravens in its loss to Louisa-Muscatine.
After losing the first two sets by scores of 25-14 and 26-24, the Ravens won the third set, 25-20. Louisa-Muscatine closed the win out by taking the fourth set, 25-20.
Hughes also had a pair of blocks for HIllcrest. Norah Yoder, Evelyn Gerber, Sophie Marshall and Yanitza Gutierrez each had two aces.
Marshall added eight kills for the Ravens, and Malia Sedlacek and Gutierrez each had five.
