Ravens recover from early deficit to beat WMU in six

After blowing a pair of seventh-innings leads during an 0-3 start, the Hillcrest Ravens have come back from early deficits in back-to-back games while winning three in a row.

On Monday, Hilllcrest (3-3) trailed 3-1 in the third inning, but came back to defeat Winfield-Mt. Union (1-8) 13-3 in six.

“You know, the guys do a great job of not panicking when we get behind,” Hillcrest coach Danny Hershberger said. “We keep a good approach at the plate and they do a great job of getting good pitches to hit and then taking a walk if it's there, and just doing whatever they can to get on base and help us get some runs across.”

Luke Schrock’s RBI single tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning. London Schrock and Jace Rempel had RBI hits to tie the game again at 3-3 in the third.

London Schrock finished 4 for 4 at the plate with a double and a three-run homer that put the Ravens ahead 10-3 in the fifth inning.

“He's starting to come into his own, swinging the bat,” Hershberger said. “He's doing a much better job of staying balanced in the box and hitting his pitch when he gets it. He's doing a great job being a senior leader for us at the plate.”

Noah Miller scored runs in the third and fourth innings as the Ravens tied the game and took the lead. He finished 2 for 5 with two stolen bases. His RBI double in the sixth put the Ravens up by 10 runs to send everyone home early.

Miller said the Ravens were confident after scoring 24 runs in two innings at Wapello the night before.

“Last night, our bats caught fire, and I think we all had a feeling that they would carry over to this game,” he said. “And so, when we were able to get people on base in the first inning, it was really nice. And then after that, we just kept building on it. It's just really nice to get the bats up and going.”

Eli Ours allowed three runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out nine over six innings.

“They came out and they were aggressive and were swinging hard and getting some good hits there,” Hershberger said. “And he did a great job of settling in after that first couple innings and pitched a really good game for us.”

Ours drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center field in the fourth. He singled and scored a run in the fifth.

Josiah Beachy, Luke Schrock and Rempel each had a single and a double. Grant Bender had a hit and two RBIs for Hillcrest in the win.
