Foul trouble plagues Lady Lions in loss

Posted

Lone Tree built a double-digit advantage in the first half at English Valleys, but ran into foul trouble in the second half and couldn’t hold the lead in a 47-40 loss.

Kasey Chown scored four of her 16 points with a pair of putbacks during an 8-0 Lone Tree run at the end of the first half. Josie Mullinnix also had four points during the run and hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Lions a 29-16 lead with 6:45 left in the third quarter.

Then Lady Lions were whistled for nine fouls during a 19-0 English Valleys run. The Bears took advantage of the bonus and scored 10 of their last 19 points at the free throw line.

“We’ve got to do a better job of attacking the rim and not turning it over,” Lone Tree coach Ryan Shelman said about the second half.

“I thought our girls did some really good things in the first half. Unfortunately, we were playing with foul trouble late in the game and it really hurt us. We weren’t able to have all of our ball handlers and girls that have experience in those situations on the floor.”

Chown hit a 3-pointer with 5:24 left in the fourth quarter to end a field goal drought of over 10 minutes.

The Lady Lions fell behind 40-32 before Allison Marshek hit a big 3-pointer, but Lone Tree was unable to get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Maddie Jacque had seven points during a 13-0 run that gave Lone Tree a 16-7 lead early in the second quarter. English Valleys came back to pull within three points before the Lady Lions restored the double-digit lead with a 10-0 run.

“We were doing a better job of rebounding the ball, putting the ball back in,” Shelman said about Lone Tree’s early success. “We did a better job of getting inside, but I think that kind of came down to personnel on the floor. So we’ve just got to find ways to build on those things and continuously do the right things throughout the game.

“Turnovers really plagued us, the foul situation really plagued us and then just not getting to the line like (English Valleys) was able to just really hurt us down the stretch.”
