Mid-Prairie sophomore Jack Pennington had a banner night in a 56-0 win over Iowa City Liberty on Friday night.

The freshman-sophomore contest was dominated from the start by Mid-Prairie and included three interceptions by Pennington. While Pennington is a sophomore now, it’s his first year with the team after being a varsity cross country runner last season.

His third interception was at their own goal line before a 93-yard return set up a touchdown on the next play.

He had three of the five turnovers forced by Mid-Prairie on the night. Caleb Vercande and Cain Brown both recovered fumbles for the Golden Hawks.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mid-Prairie put up a barrage of points with four touchdowns and four two-point conversions in the quarter.

Tyler Helmuth had two rushing touchdowns, Braden Hartley had three and Aydin Kutcher had one.

Mid-Prairie freshman-sophomore coach Derek Yoder said the rushing attack was on the backs of their offensive line. The Golden Hawks rotated in players, but the offensive lineman for the night were Zane Fisher, Mason Brady, Jack Zahradnek, Gannon Callahan, Kaden Meader, Caleb Western and Jaxsen Timmerman.

Will Cavanagh was 3-8 for 69 yards and a touchdown on the night. He threw a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Shawn Dodds.

Jardin Mufaume led the Golden Hawk defense with six six tackles and one sack.

Iowa City Liberty was held to just 94 total yards of offense on the night. The Mid-Prairie defense held the Bolts to just 1.5 yards per rush.
