MEDIAPOLIS

Striking out the final Central Lee hitter with the bases loaded Wednesday night, Mid-Prairie freshman pitcher Collin Miller sent the Golden Hawks to the Class 2A Iowa State Tournament.

The Golden Hawks defeated Central Lee 9-7, capturing their first substate championship in 13 years.

Just after the game’s final strikeout, the Golden Hawks charged onto the field for a celebration that lasted nearly an hour in Mediapolis.

“This team has begun another legacy,” Mid-Prairie coach Andy Greiner said.

The Golden Hawks scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead, and added three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth.

Mid-Prairie (15-3) begins play in the state tournament at 1:30 p.m. Monday, when it faces West Lyon (14-3) at Principal Park in Des Moines. The Golden Hawks are seeded No. 4 in the eight-team tournament.

Due to precautions for COVID-19, seating will be limited to 1,800 spectators and all seating will be reserved with physical distancing in place. Parking is free. The stadium will be cleared following the Class  2A opener at 10:30, and spectators for the 1:30 game won’t be allowed in until that happens.

Advance tickets will be sold online.
