Riverside residents will soon have new trash bins to place at the curb for garbage pickup.
The Riverside City Council Monday night reviewed a new contract with Johnson County Refuse, which will begin picking up trash in standard-size bins that can be lifted into garbage trucks with an automatic arm.
The council will vote on approving the contract at its next meeting.
The new service will begin in December. Carts will be delivered by the end of November. Information on the new service will be included with the carts. Fliers will be left in recycling bins in the coming weeks telling about the pending changes.
Company owner Steve Smith said that rising worker compensation costs has pushed the use of automated trucks.
The bins are similar to those used in Kalona currently.
“People will no longer have to buy their own garbage cans,” Smith said when he first met with the council in September.
