The appointment of Molly Roberts as news editor of The News was announced this week by Publisher Ronald C. Slechta.
“We are pleased to have someone of her ability and writing skills to join our staff,” Slechta said.
Her primary area of coverage will include Kalona, Wellman and Riverside.
Christopher Borro, an intern now attending the University of Iowa, will also be assisting with the coverage to Riverside and Lone Tree, as well as the Highland and Lone Tree School boards.
Originally from Grand Rapids, Mich., Roberts moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa in 2010, where she studied journalism and English.
“I’m beyond excited for the opportunity to work for a publication like The News, and to work in Kalona,” Roberts said. “I’m looking forward to becoming a member of this community and to learn everything about this special corner of my adopted home state.”
While Roberts has a background in journalism, including a stint at the sports editor for The Daily Iowan, she is also an avid writer of fiction and is currently hard at work on her first novel and a collection of short stories.
“What I love about writing of all kinds is the ability to tell stories about people and for people,” Roberts said. “I find so much value in talking with strangers and digging out the unique thing they have to tell the world. We can learn so much from each other if we are willing to listen to voices other than our own.”
Roberts lives in Iowa City with her husband, Seth, dogs Fenway and Skillet, and cat Whiskey.
James Jennings has left The News to accept a position with the Southeast Iowa Union. He plans to continue to live in Kalona.
