FORT DODGE
On a day that began with snow in the air Saturday morning, Mid-Prairie’s Emmett Swarzentruber stole the show.
Swartzentruber extended Mid-Prairie’s incredible hold on individual cross country state championships to eight consecutive years with a win in the Class 2A boys state title race. He won in a personal-best time of 15 minutes, 51 seconds.
He is the first Golden Hawk not named Hostetler to grab a championship in those eight years, following up Anna Hostetler’s 2A girls victory in 2016, three consecutive titles by Marie Hostetler and then another three titles by Danielle Hostetler.
Danielle Hostetler placed fifth in her final high school cross country race Saturday, leading the Golden Hawks girls team to its eighth consecutive Top 5 finish. The Golden Hawks placed fourth.
Hostetler finished with a time of 18:55.3 in a race that was dominated by Sumner-Fredericksburg senior Hillary Trainor (18:09.5). It was a reversal of last year’s state race when Hostetler was first and Trainor was fifth with a time 1:10 slower than her winning time Saturday.
Hostetler was attempting to become just the second in state girls history to win four consecutive state titles.
Golden Hawks freshman Brooklyn Stutzman finished 37th in her state meet debut.
See next week’s edition of The News for more details on the state championship meet.
