Mid-Prairie wins regular season finale

Mid-Prairie’s softball team hit a magical number in its final regular-season game this past Friday.

The Golden Hawks topped North Cedar by a score of 8-2, winning for the 10th time this season.

Considering the Golden Hawks won just twice last season and hadn’t reached double figures in victories since 2017, first-year head coach Matt Hoeppner realized how special Friday’s win was.

“These girls deserved the success that found them at the end of the season,” Hoeppner said. “They work exceptionally hard day in and day out, and the future is bright.”

Dakota Mitchell, a rising freshman who started 35 games in her initial season with the varsity, led Mid-Prairie with three hits at North Cedar. She also had three hits in a 12-2 victory earlier last week against Iowa City Regina Catholic.

Senior pitcher Myah Lugar struck out seven and earned her seventh win of the season at North Cedar.

The Mid-Prairie JV squad blanked North Cedar, 18-0.

Regina 10, Mid-Prairie 1

Mid-Prairie 12, Regina 2

The Golden Hawks scored seven runs in the sixth inning to finish off a 12-2 win over Regina Catholic in the second game of a doubleheader. It was the team’s last home game of the season at Mid-Prairie Middle School on June 29.

Dakota Mitchell and Hannah Sellers each had three hits for Mid-Prairie. Sellers drove in three runs, and Mitchell drove in two runs and scored twice.

They led a Golden Hawks offense that scored 11 runs in the final two innings of Game 2 after scoring just two runs the rest of the night in two games.

Madeline Schrader and Brenna Jehle each scored two runs.

Dawsyn Miller, a junior pitcher, struck out two and gave up five hits.

Regina scored four runs in the first inning of Game 1 and cruised to a 10-1 victory.

Annie Gahan hit a home run for the Regals, and Emma Nibaur, Baylee O’Connor, Gabby Sueppel and Gahan each had two hits.

Mitchell, Jehle, Miller and Gabi Robertson each had hits for the Golden Hawks, and Katelyn Schneider scored Mid-Prairie’s only run in the second inning on a single by Jehle.
