Hughes scores four goals in 10-0 win at Monticello

Esther Hughes and the Mid-Prairie girls soccer team were dominant in their first victory of the season, a 10-0 win at Monticello on Friday.

Six different players scored a goal for Mid-Prairie, including Paityn Jennings who ended the game 30 minutes early with the Golden Hawks’ tenth score of the day.

Mid-Prairie led 9-0 at the half.

“I think our passing lanes were really good, and we did well just making runs and seeing each other,” said Esther Hughes, who led the Golden Hawks with seven shots on goal. “I think we had a lot of good opportunities to shoot because we had great crosses.”

Hughes had an assist and found the net four times in the blowout win.

“It felt pretty good,” Hughes said. “You know, I had a lot of good passes from teammates and a lot of good opportunities to shoot, and I took them.”

Kaitlin Martin had two assists and scored twice in the win, and Kina Miller had a goal and an assist as well.

“We were able to put a lot of pressure up on offense,” coach Justin Barthelman said. You know, placing through balls, long balls.

“That’s great – when you have that many people move the ball around and you can end up getting some in the goal. It’s always nice to get 10 goals in a game, it doesn’t really happen that often, but it’s just good to see.”

Sophia Baker and Katrina Curtiss each scored goals for the Golden Hawks.

Mid-Prairie got solid play from its bench when Hughes and several other starters went to the bench later in the first half. The Golden Hawks continued to create chances and keep the pressure on Monticello’s defense.

“Our backups stepped in and you really couldn’t see a drop off in a whole lot of different spots,” Barthelman said.

“And we moved girls around a lot in different spots, kind of just to see what we’ve got. We still have a really young team and some new players. So it’s kind of just trying to figure out where people can play – lineups that fit the best with what we’ve got.”

A few key pieces have been missing from the Mid-Prairie lineup in the first two games including Julia Boller, who led the Golden Hawks in goals and assists as a freshman in 2019.

“We’ve kinda been hit with the injury bug early on,” Barthelman said. “We’re still missing probably about three or four girls that are usually starters. So it’s good to see some backups and young girls coming in, playing at different spots. It was a good end of the week, ready for next week and our first home game Tuesday.”
