Mid-Prairie to host Colton Allen memorial wrestling tournament

Posted

Mid-Prairie will host their home wrestling tournament this weekend, this time with a new name.
The Colton Allen Memorial Wrestling Tournament will take place for the first time this Saturday to honor the Mid-Prairie student.
Colton Allen wrestled for three years for the Mid-Prairie wrestling team and had been set for his senior year, but died in a tragic drowning accident this summer.
The annual tournament hosted by Mid-Prairie was renamed to honor Allen and memorialize what he meant to the wrestling team.
Coach Justin Garvey said everything from the trophy to the medals will honor Colton.
“I’m really excited to see how those medals turned out,” Garvey said.
There will also be a special trophy presentation during the tournament. The custom trophy will feature all of the names of last year’s Mid-Prairie wrestling team engraved on the trophy, so Colton’s name will always reside in the Mid-Prairie trophy case.
The wrestling team has been selling shirts via an online store that have Colton’s name on them.
Wrestling is set to begin at 10 a.m. in the six-team round robin tournament.
The teams attending the tournament include Alburnett, Ankeny Centennial, Benton Community, Iowa Valley and Mediapolis.
The top three in each weight class will medal.
Colton’s twin brother Cory Allen will wrestle at 182 pounds. So far this season Cory is 7-0 including a victory over a ranked opponent to win his weight class at the New London tournament.
The tournament will feature ranked wrestlers from multiple teams including Mid-Prairie’s own 195-pound No. 2 Isaac Boucher.
