Mid-Prairie students perform well at district speech contest

Several Mid-Prairie High School performers earned Division 1 rankings at IHSSA District Individual Events Speech Contest at Pekin High School on Feb. 29.

Students earning a Division 1 rating and qualification at state contest were:

• Olivia Caskey, in Acting and Solo Musical Theatre.

• Kyra Helmuth, in Acting and Solo Musical Theatre.

• Emily Marner in Solo Improvisation and Spontaneous Speaking.

• Terra Richardson in Acting and After-Dinner Speaking.

• Danielle Brown in Interpretive Poetry Reading.

• Gavin Frascht in Solo Musical Theatre.

• Avery Frede in Solo Improvisation.

• Gabi Knepp in Storytelling.

• Elizabeth Meader in Storytelling.

• Trevor Nida in Interpretive Prose Reading.

• Marina Richardson in Storytelling.

• Emily Righter in Radio News Broadcasting.

Students earning a Division 2 rating were:

• Diego Ayala, Spontaneous Speaking.

• Gavin Frascht, Spontaneous Speaking.

• Gabi Knepp, Interpretive Poetry Reading.

• Marina Richardson, Interpretive Poetry Reading.

Students who earned a Division 1 rating in their events will travel to Grinnell High School on Saturday, March 14 to compete at state contest.

Students who earn Division 1 ratings from all three of their judges at state have the chance to be nominated to participate in the All-State Individual Events Festival at the University of Northern Iowa on March 30.

Saturday’s competition came after Mid-Prairie hosted the River Valley Conference Individual Events Speech Contest on Feb. 25.

A total of 10 schools participated in the event.

Best of Center awards were earned by Kyra Helmuth in Solo Musical Theatre and Acting, and to Elizabeth Meader in Storytelling.

Second place in center awards were earned by Terra Richardson in After-Dinner Speaking and Acting, Olivia Caskey in Solo Musical Theatre, and Marina Richardson in Storytelling.

Third place in center awards was earned by Emily Righter in Public Address.
