Eleven students competed in seventeen events at Mid-Prairie High School on Saturday, March 13 for the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Individual Events Speech Contest. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the students participated in an in-person contest at Mid-Prairie High School, evaluated by three certified IHSSA judges. In a normal year, contests would be held at a variety of different host schools.
The following students each earned Division I ratings in two events: Kyra Helmuth, Solo Acting and Solo Musical Theatre; Olivia Caskey, Solo Acting and Solo Musical Theatre; Avery Frede, Radio News Broadcasting and Solo Improvisation; and Elizabeth Meader, Storytelling and Interpretive Prose.
The following students each earned a Division I rating in one event: Avery Slaubaugh, Interpretive Prose; Haydon Bailey, Solo Acting; Diego Ayala, Spontaneous Speaking; Jennifer Sanchez, Interpretive Poetry; and Emily Marner, Solo Musical Theatre.
Divison II ratings went to the following students: Haydon Bailey, Reviewing; Isadora Goode, Interpretive Prose; Gavin Frascht, Spontaneous Speaking; Emily Marner, Solo Improvisation.
All-State nominations will be posted on March 24. Due to the ongoing pandemic, there will not be an Individual Events All-State Festival this year, but recognition will be awarded to outstanding performances. For recognition, a performance must receive nominations from two of the judges.
Speech Coaches at Mid-Prairie High School are Christine Meader and Lisa Helmuth, with volunteer assistance from Meredith Caskey and Natalie Silbaugh.
