Five Mid-Prairie students competed at the Knights of Columbus district spelling bee held at Clear Creek-Amana on Jan. 28, and for the first time in Spelling Club history, every speller finished in the top two, allowing them all to advance to the regional bee, held in Cedar Rapids Feb. 16.
“Wow! That means we all get to go,” said Jason Heitman after the completion of the final bee that night.
Fiona McClellen won the fourth-grade division. Max Kipp won the fifth-grade bee; Taylor Pence took second. Logan McClellen won the seventh-grade bee; Jason Heitman took second.
Three weeks later at the regional bee in Cedar Rapids, four of the spellers finished in the top two, qualifying for the state competition. This tied the record of four Mid-Prairie students going to the state bee.
The Mid-Prairie spellers finished in the same place as they did at districts with the exception of Jason Heitman who took fourth place.
The four spellers will compete at the state (and final) competition in Ames on March 8.
The Spelling Club is coached by Trent Yoder and Pat Anderson.
