Mid-Prairie pulls away late in both games at Tipton

Kayden Reinier didn’t have much time to prepare for the first pitch of Mid-Prairie’s doubleheader at Tipton on Monday. But a brief warm up was all the senior needed to throw a complete, 7-inning game with just 67 pitches.

“Aidan Rath was supposed to pitch and his arm was a little sore, so we came out with Kayden Renier right on the spot,” Mid-Prairie coach Kyle Mullet said. He had about 10 minutes to warm up and he came in and he pitched a full game and did an awesome job tonight.”

Reinier allowed just one run on five hits and no walks with seven strikeouts in the 9-1 victory.

Rath had three doubles and three RBIs on the night as No. 7 Mid-Prairie (15-5) swept the Tigers (5-18) with a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

In game one, Karson Grout and Rath gave Reinier a lead before he threw a pitch, putting a run on the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles.

The score remained 2-0 until the fifth inning when the Golden Hawks took advantage of an error, a hit batter and a walk to add three runs in the inning.

Grout finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Alex Bean and Cain Brown each went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Vinnie Bowlin was 2 for 4 as well. Brown stole five bases and scored twice.

Reinier was one out away from a shutout, but a leadoff single would come back to hurt him when Braden Bortels put Tipton on the scoreboard with a two-out single in the seventh.

Game two was the same story as Mid-Prairie led 2-0 through four innings before pulling away for a comfortable win.

Grout walked five, but did not give up a hit or run in four innings. The Tigers had two on with one out in the fourth, but Grout ended the threat with his sixth and seventh strikeouts of the game.

“That was huge, being able to work through that,” Mullett said. “You get your back against the wall and you bend, don’t break, that says a lot about your confidence and the type of player he is. He’s a freshman, but he plays like a senior.”

Grout issued a two-out walk in the third, but after a pick off attempt, first baseman Cain Brown waited as the runner got up and tagged him as soon as his hand left the bag.

Brown pitched the final two innings and allowed no runs on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Bowlin went 2 for 4 again in the second game and drove in a run. Keegan Gingerich had a hit and drove in his fourth run of the day.

Anamosa 7, Mid-Prairie 5

The Blue Raiders scored three runs in the sixth inning to knock off No. 7-ranked Mid-Prairie in a game played June 24.

The Golden Hawks had scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the second to take a 4-0 lead, but Anamosa (15-12) scored four runs in the third to tie the score.

Kayden Reinier had two hits and drove in a run for the Golden Hawks. Keegan Gingerich, Vinny Bowlin and Cain Brown also drove in runs.

Mid-Prairie pitcher Alex Bean struck out two and gave up just one hit in 2.1 innings of work.

Eli Lehrman had two hits for the Blue Raiders, and Trae Klatt drove in three runs with a double.
