Mid-Prairie girls cruise to home win over Anamosa

As part of a busy stretch of four games in five days, the Mid-Prairie girls basketball team built an early lead and did not look back in gaining a 71-35 win Feb. 6 over Anamosa in Wellman.

On a night where the team honored five seniors, it was a junior who had the hot hand. Myah Lugar hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help give the Golden Hawks a 9-4 lead. A Lugar basket gave Mid-Prairie their first double-digit lead at 15-4 and the Golden Hawks would take a 20-5 lead after one quarter of play.

“Myah works very hard on her shooting and puts in a lot of time outside of practice and that practice is paying off for her in games,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daniel Hershberger. “I though she did a great job of letting the game come to her against Anamosa and not forcing tough or contested shots.

Mid-Prairie expanded their lead in the second quarter. Two 3-pointers from a freshman, Amara Jones, helped Mid-Prairie’s lead grow to more than 20, 31-10, and they would take a 34-15 lead into the halftime locker room.

Lugar’s pin-point shooting continued in the second half. She converted a rare 4-point play to push the Golden Hawks’ lead to 41-17 three minutes into the third quarter. The lead would remain more than 20 at 50-27 going into the fourth quarter.

Lugar started the fourth quarter doing what she had done the entire game, draining 3-point shots. She ended the third quarter with a 3-pointer and started the fourth quarter doing the same. That helped lead the Golden Hawks to a 21-8 edge in the final quarter to give the game its 36-point margin.

Lugar finished with 23 points on 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range and she also lead the team with seven rebounds. Georgia Nisly and Amara Jones each drained a pair of 3-pointers in the lopsided win.
