Mid-Prairie football is coming to a field near you.
The Golden Hawks will have their first public showing this Friday with an inter-squad scrimmage as part of the schools fall showcase.
The battle between members of the Golden Hawk football team will take place after a booster club meal and introduction of the other fall sports.
The cross country team will be introduced first as they start the campaign for a third-straight title on the girls side. Following that the volleyball team will be introduced and they will host a scrimmage as well. The dance team will be introduced and also perform.
To round out the night the football team will scrimmage themselves.
The scrimmage will help the Mid-Prairie lineup find some new backs and wide receivers as most of last year’s yards were lost to graduation.
On the ground, Mid-Prairie loses 95% of its rushing yards from last season. So a multitude of backs have the opportunity to step up and find carries in the offense.
Brad Tornow returns to quarterback for his third season at the helm. Tornow was 58-138 last season, throwing for 816 yards and five touchdowns.
The leading returning receiver is tight end Jack Baker, who caught 12 passes for 144 yards last year. Zeb Danner, Cole Davis and Kayden Reinier each caught one pass last season.
Mid-Prairie will also be sporting a new kicker and punter this season.
After the inter-squad scrimmage, the Golden Hawks will get one more game-like situation with a scrimmage against Iowa City Regina. The Gator Bowl will now be hosted by Mid-Prairie on Aug. 23 and start off with a player auction at 6:30. Players are auctioned off for a few hours of work to raise money for the football program.
After the auction, Mid-Prairie will scrimmage Class 1A power Regina. The game had originally been planned to play in Iowa City, but was moved to Wellman.
Mid-Prairie kicks off its regular season schedule at home with an Aug. 30 matchup against Grinnell.
