First graders and second graders at Mid-Prairie East Elementary sampled their first healthy bites of the Pick a Better Snack program this month.
This program is designed to motivate children to eat more fruits and vegetables in meals and snacks and to be more physically active.
Each week, Washington County Extension and Outreach volunteers Heather Lunkley and Chrystal Rath visit the first- and second-grade classrooms to talk about healthy snacks, and making healthy choices. The students always get to sample a particular fruit or vegetable of the day.
Each week, the students are reminded to be brave and try new things – including healthy fruits and vegetables.
During the first week, they discussed how there are more than 2,000 varieties of apples grown in the U.S., and they all taste and look a little different.
The students were introduced to 11 different kinds of apples and compared the taste and texture of the Granny Smith and Pink Lady in the apple taste test.
The Pick a Better Snack supplies at Mid-Prairie East Elementary are funded by Mid-Prairie School Boosters.
